My story

Hello and welcome to Only Teethin’, a hub of advice and articles dedicated to designing a life less ordinary and living life on your own terms.

My Story

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. Once upon a time, I lived a very glamorous, exciting life – on paper, at least.

I worked in public relations in London’s Soho, advising global brands and enjoying all the perks of working for one of the UK’s top PR agencies – travel, events, swanky parties.

I had a fantastic social life, a lovely flat, a great wardrobe.

I was also miserable.

Burnt-out. Disillusioned. Confused about what I wanted. So I did what any sane person would do and moved to the other side of the world. To Bondi Beach in Australia, specifically.

And while it was as wonderful as the pictures suggest and I had a great time, I still didn’t feel that content. Not really. I still didn’t feel like I’d found my ‘thing’, my place. What the heck was wrong with me and what the heck was I going to do?

my hellish (not really) former neighbourhood

So I left Australia after three years and returned to my less-than-glamorous hometown of Hull, East Yorkshire, with my tail between my legs. (Legs that weren’t even that tanned after three years in the southern hemisphere, godamn it.)

I was back in my childhood bedroom at the grand old age of 32. I had no job, no home of my own, limited funds and the prospect of starting all over again. Quite the catch, eh?

Fast-forward a few years and I’ve built my own successful business as a writer and a communications consultant, earning more than I ever did when I worked for someone else.

More importantly, I now manage my own schedule around looking after my son Ted.  I love what I do, I work less and I live more.

(My legs are still translucent, but I guess you can’t have everything.)

So How Did I Do It?

Things started to slot into place for me when I finally found the courage to listen to my gut about what it was that I really wanted – which was to live life on my own terms, to be my own boss and build my own meaningful connections through my work.

Good things started happening when I stopped listening to the negative, niggly voices in my head that had previously told me:

-that I wasn’t ‘the type of person’ to run their own business (how can there be one type of person who runs their own business??!!)

-that I wasn’t loud or confident, or ruthless enough

-that I didn’t know enough

-that I went to a crap school and didn’t have any connections to help me land my first contracts etc etc etc

I pressed ahead and took a leap and all of those other clichés and… worked, and it feels bloody good!

OK, I don’t live next to Bondi Beach anymore. I no longer have a free bar in my office, or any of the other perks I enjoyed while working for a ‘cool’ company.

And life’s generally not as high-octane as it once was.

Unless you count walking up and down slopes in the park with a slope-obsessed toddler as ‘high-octane’.

But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Only Teethin’ aims to:

  • Encourage those who are wanting to take the leap into self-employment, of ditching the 9-5 or launching a ‘side-hustle’ with useful tips and sound advice on work and life in general
  • Dispel the myth that successful business owners must be aggressive, trample-over-anyone-if-that-what-it-takes types
  • Build a community of like-minded souls who just *get* it – whether you’re a mum juggling work and a new side project or wanting to quit a job that no longer inspires you
